The 76th Cannes Film Festival has invited two Korean films to screen!

The official selection for this year’s French Film Festival was announced on April 13th.

The upcoming noir film “Hopeless” (also known as “Hwaran”), directed by Kim Chang Hoon, will screen in the Un Certain Regard section of this year’s festival. The film stars Song Joong Ki as a mobster who becomes entangled with a teenager (Hong Sa Bin) who is desperate to escape his hellish hometown. Song Joong Ki chose to appear in the film for no pay.

Meanwhile, Kim Jee Woon’s upcoming film “Cobweb” will be shown Outside of Competition. Song Kang Ho will star in the black comedy as an obsessive film director in the 1970s who is struggling to finish his new film, alongside Im Soo Jung, Jeon Yeo Been, f(x)’s Krystal, and Oh Jung Se.

Notably, Song Kang Ho made history last year by becoming the first Korean male to win an acting award at the Cannes Film Festival (for his performance in “Broker”).

The Cannes Film Festival 2023 will take place from May 16 to May 27.
